The Uses of Silt Sock
Silt socks serve a variety of purposes in a wide range of construction and environmental protection projects.
Some of the primary purposes of silt sock include:
Sediment Control
Primarily, silt socks allow water to flow through at a controlled rate while trapping sediment. This is accomplished by the polypropylene mesh sock filled with wood chips. The design of the sock provides more intimate contact with the ground than a silt fence, preventing water from flowing underneath.
Pollutant Filtration
Wood chips can be more effective than geotextile fabric in normal silt fences, because the organic filler material helps to remove common pollutants found in stormwater. Including chemicals, sewage overflow, cigarette butts, plastic and styrofoam containers, paint & construction debris, and more.
Stormwater Management
Stormwater runoff can create serious problems if not effectively managed, especially if water runs rapidly into storm drains, sewer systems, and drainage ditches. These problems include downstream flooding, stream bank erosion that also causes turbidity (muddiness), habitat destruction, and contaminated waterways. When you can’t use a large scale erosion control blanket, turbidity curtain or silt fence, silt socks are a great alternative.
Walls, Barriers, & Slopes
Silt socks, silt fences, and erosion control products provide effective protection for a variety of landscapes that are vulnerable to stormwater damage and erosion. Keep wall foundations secure from the effects of water seepage. For natural barriers, the filtration and protection of silt socks is unequalled. When you don’t require a large erosion control blanket, using multiple filter socks on sloping landscapes will preserve the soil from being eroded and prevent crop damage due to stormwater runoff.
